Harry Potter Name Etymology

Naturally, I am a Harry Potter fan (as I am sure I have probably mentioned MILLIONS of times). Having studied Latin for a few years, I began to pick up many of the Latin words that Harry Potter terminology comes from (particularly spells) but I didn't know that much about the character names which is something I find fascinating. So, I began to research some of the character names and thought I'd write a post about them – I've tried to cover most of the main characters.

*Apologies for any typos – I designed this very quickly*
*Also, sorry for poor quality, Blogger is messing up today*

Sorry for the lack of posts! I've just done 8 GCSE exams, but I still have two weeks of mock exams and four controlled assessments to go before Ruby is a free elf. :)

  1. This is the coolest infographic. Ever. Hands down. Whoa :D I love how clever so many of the names are, like Remus Lupin's! Some of these I had no idea about - Bellatrix's name seems even cooler than it already was, haha:D (Random: My cat is named after Bellatrix. So she can now be called the War Cat In Power. Mwhahah. (I'm a little hyper none of this is making sense:P))

  3. THIS IS SO COOL! I didn't know any of this stuff, plus your graphic-y skills are INSANE. How do you do it?! The meaning of Hagrid and Dumbledore's name make me giggle. This is a really fitting post since I'm currently watching The Goblet of Fire. Back to 'Professer Dumbly-dore', as Madam Maxine says! XD

  7. This is brilliant! Like we discussed last night, I have a note book filled with family trees, character drawings, spell meanings and also name meanings - this really reminds me of my obsession with Harry Potter.
I don't know if you watch QI (not many people do) but I love the programme and there's an episode with Daniel Radcliffe where they discuss the meaning of names of Harry Potter characters.

Dumbledore - comes from Bumblebee and like you said Dumbledore is seen to always be busy.

  16. THIS IS THE BEST POST OF EVER, I LOVE IT ALL.

Very very very very cool, Harry means leader of an army?? AND DOBBY MEANS A BENEVOLENT ELF, I AM FANGIRLING SO HARD. Also Remus, of course it comes from the Roman wolf legend, that makes so much sense! As does Fenrir, and especially Nympthadora! And the thing about Dumbledore is very heartwarming :')

.... I'm sorry for all my gushing, but you know how much I love HP. Thank you for this post. It has improved my life.
