Putting Together My Holiday TBR Pile

One of my favourite things about going away is the prospect of hours and hours of uninterrupted reading. When you're away from home, there's nothing to distract you – no work, no wifi, no nothing. So, needless to say, I get a lot of reading done when I'm on holiday.

I'm going on holiday in a couple of days time, and I've finally sorted out my holiday TBR [to be read] pile. Before I explain how/why I chose each book, here's the list:

PHYSICAL COPIES
The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson [BOUGHT]
The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson [BOUGHT]
The Library of Unrequited Love by Sophie Divry [BORROWED]
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides [LIBRARY]
The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides [BOUGHT]
The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton [BOUGHT]
Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente [BOUGHT]
Frog Music by Emma Donoghue [LIBRARY]
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith [BOUGHT]
The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen [LIBRARY]

KINDLE BOOKS
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart [BOUGHT]
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler [BOUGHT]

How I Put My Holiday TBR Pile Together:

I. NUMBER OF BOOKS TO BRING
I thought about this a lot and I realised that I read a ridiculous number of books when I'm on holiday. Last year, I brought a book for each day I was away and I managed to STILL run out of books.

So, this helped me realise that I should bring A LOT of books (not complaining!)

II. FAVOURITE GENRES FOR SUMMER
For me, this is easy: fantasy. I love fantasy all year round, but I particularly like fantasy during the summer for some odd reason. This is partly why I added The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages, Deathless and The Queen of the Tearling.

However, I also enjoy a bit of contemporary, so this is partly why I picked The Marriage Plot, We Were Liars and a couple of others.

III. RECOMMENDATIONS FROM BLOGGERS (a.k.a. stalk blogs)
I went onto It Was Lovely Reading You, where I saw a review of The Queen of the Tearling. Not to mention the raving reviews of We Were Liars and The Miniaturist which are EVERYWHERE.

IV. RECOMMENDATIONS FROM FRIENDS (a.k.a. steal all their books)
My friend had just finished The Library of Unrequited Love so I borrowed that from her whilst she borrowed a couple of my books (Fahrenheit 451, Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, The Ocean at the End of the Lane).

V. LIST OF UNFINISHED SERIES
I put together a list of series I hadn't finished so I could figure out which books to buy/borrow from the library. This put The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages and The Silkworm onto my list.

VI. TRIP TO THE LIBRARY
I went to the library to see if I could find any of the books mentioned above, picking up a few extra ones that caught my eye (Middlesex and Frog Music).

VII. BUYING THE REMAINING ONES
I already owned a couple of the books listed above (I'd bought them a while back) but, because there were more books that I couldn't see at my library, I decided to buy these.

The ones I'm most anticipating are, of course, the remaining Mistborn books, We Were Liars (I want to be in on the secret!), Deathless (this is 100% my kind of book) and The Marriage Plot (again, this sounds PERFECT for me).

  2. These all look amazing - especially The Miniaturist and The Queen of the Tearling. I've read bits of both in Waterstones and they seem great.
I'm hoping to buy some of your fantasy recommendations whilst I'm in London this week.
Have a great holiday! Where are you going?

  5. I love going away for the same reason; I get to catch up on so many good books! For me, it's usually review copies that I've procrastinated on reading. You have a great pile of books, happy reading! :)

    1. I've managed to catch up with all my review copies! Well, I've tried not to request any of recent so I didn't have too many to read anyway. :')

And yes – I can't wait to get started on all of them!

  6. I wish I planned out my reading list for my holiday but I just end up taking a few books and then don't end up reading any really - this year we were in the Highlands and I just couldn't help exploring the wilderness around our caravan! I'm too much like a woodland creature, haha! :3

These all look great - hope you have a fab time on your holiday! :D

  10. I IS MENTIONNNNEEEDDDD. :D
Also. RUBY. You did the unthinkable. ONE book per day?! I always take one book per day PLUS one/two books for the journey there and one/two for the journey back. So basically I always take AT LEAST 10/11 books..;P

  11. THE LIBRARY OF UNREQUITED LOVE YAYAYAYAY FANGIRLING FANGIRLING CRYING!!!

After seeing Hawwa's review of The Queen of the Tearling, I really want to read it!

Unfortunately I couldn't read as much on holiday as normal as I was puppy-minding, but I did get through The Dream Thieves (MAGGIE STIEFVATER. WHAT.), The Great Gatsby (depressing as), Persuasion (love Austen!) and Rose Under Fire (!!). Now I'm halfway through A Clash of Kings .... nom nom!! :D
